RARE 1940s II0II Dark Blue Wool Coat Balloon Sleeve UK S/M
RARE 1940s II0II Dark Blue Wool Coat Balloon Sleeve UK S/M
A rare & fabulous vintage IIOII 'Dinner Plate' labelled 1940s double-breasted coat, made by 'Lyndale' from a fairly heavyweight diagonal weave wool fabric in dark blue. It has a wonderful sculptural silhouette with a wealth of details - broad, scalloped, strongly padded shoulder yoke panel, wide balloon sleeves with pleated tops & elasticated cuffs, darted, fitted waist with rear scalloped seam, full skirt with rear pleats, & pockets with large scalloped flaps. It is fitted with 8 early plastic buttons & is fully lined with purplish-blue rayon acetate.
According to a 1946 Board of Trade announcement, the IIOII mark (now commonly known as ‘Dinner Plate’ or ‘Double Eleven’) was used to signify that the garment “Is in the most expensive range of that manufacturer’s non-Utility production, for a manufacturer may use it only if he is using a cloth which is not utility & for which he has paid more than a given price. The mark should not be confused with the Utility mark - CC41”.
NB: Please study the photographs carefully, they form an important part of the description.

Condition:
In good condition overall with some surface wear on the high spots & some minor flaws:- there is a small repair to the right lapel, small repairs to the pocket flap top seams (arrowed) - a worn patch by the back seam under the collar - on very close examination there are 3 tiny surface moth nips on the right skirt front - internally, the lining is patchy & discoloured overall, with scattered small holes (the worst part is shown in close up), polishing at the wear points, a seamed repair in the left bust area & a repair behind the jigger button - the coat has been blind hemmed with a slightly different fabric. Has been recently dry cleaned, & thoroughly steamed prior to listing.
I do my very best to carefully list/illustrate any flaws I find. This item is sold as is - no returns unless the item has been grossly misrepresented.
Please check the above measurements and compare to a similar garment of your own before buying - no refund offered for items that don’t fit.
