A lovely vintage 1940s shirtwaister dress, made by "Alice Edwards" from a soft wool fabric with a slightly brushed surface in a dark red colour with a jade green plaid or checked pattern. The bodice has an open neck with large pointed collar, a nicely-shaped chest pocket with large faux flap, medium padded shoulders, & fairly wide 3/4 length sleeves with cuff turn-backs; the 2-gore skirt is bias cut, & very flared. The front opens to the waist with 3 large early plastic buttons, there is a side opening with silver metal 'Flash' zip, & belt loops for the matching belt with self-covered buckle. There is a sliver of a cut off label in the neck seam which based on past experience I think is the remains of a CC41 Utility Scheme label (see close up).

Condition: In good condition with light wear overall & some small discreet repairs, about 12 in total (see close ups) - there are faint creases in the skirt where there once were knife pleats - the smallest belt hole has been fairly clumsily repaired. Has been carefully hand washed & steamed prior to listing.
