Rare Original 1930s 1940s Jodhpur Suit Blue Wool Jacket Elephant Ear Breeches UK S/M
An outstanding vintage 1930s/1940s jodhpur suit, thought to have been made as a livery type of uniform (e.g. a lift attendant) rather than for riding, in a strikingly vibrant Royal Blue wool twill fabric. The fitted jacket is a single-breasted 2-button style, with notched lapels, front Princess seams, unpadded shoulders, angled lower flapped pockets, & rear centre vent; it is fully lined in black polished cotton. The jodhpurs have very full-cut 'elephant ear' thighs & slim calves with turn-ups & concealed button fastening; they are unlined & have button fastening at the left side. Both pieces have labels from 'W. Mutrie', a long-defunct Edinburgh costume house; there was a big fashion for 'Coronation Blue' garments prompted by the Coronation of George VI in 1937, so perhaps this dates from then.
Please study the photographs carefully - they form an important part of the description.
Size: Suggested UK S/M (please check measurements below)
All measurements are external, taken with the garment laid flat, to be doubled where appropriate (with approx. metric equivalent):
Jacket - Bust (armpit to armpit): 18 1/2" (47 cm)
Waist: 15 1/2" (39.2 cm)
Width at hem: 23" (58.3 cm)
Shoulder width (seam to seam): 15 1/2" (39.3 cm)
Sleeve length shoulder seam to cuff: 22 3/4" (57.8 cm)*
*The cuff has a generous hem which could be let down by 1 1/4" maximum (but the lining would need to be extended)
Sleeve length underarm to cuff: 16 1/2"" (41.9 cm)
Length nape to hem: 25 1/2" (64.7 cm)
Jodphurs - waist: 14" (35.5 cm)
Hips (measured 7" below waist): 22 1/2" (57.2 cm)
Rise (top of waistband to crotch): 19" (48.2 cm)
Length outseam: 41" (104.2 cm)
Inside leg: 29 1/2" (75 cm)
Width at calf seam: 6 1/4" (15.8 cm)
Cuff width: 5 1/2" (14 cm)
Condition:
In excellent condition, appears virtually unworn - no external flaws noted - on the lining there is tiny tear at the top of the centre back seam, some scattered pinprick/pinhead sized holes & marks - the jodhpurs have been let out at the waist, by removing the rear darts & adding an small extension to the waistband - on looking inside it can be seen that parts of the calf seams have been re-stitched. The suit has a very slightly musty smell from long storage which should dissipate with a bit of airing.
I have a no returns policy - please check the above measurements and compare to a similar garment of your own before buying - no refund offered for items that don’t fit.
