Super vintage Victorian or Edwardian fall front knee breeches, tailor made by 'G.O. Palmer' of Cambridge from lustrous heavyweight, fairly stiff plush or long-pile velvet fabric in a mid Prussian blue colour. They have a full width front panel which fastens with 4 stamped buttons to the high rise waistband, 2 front pockets, fishtail back & braces buttons; trimmed at the hem with gold bullion braid and a fringed mock garter, they fasten below the knee with 3 gilt buttons and a gilt 2-prong buckle. Presumably part of a footman's livery uniform - the buttons have a crest with an eagle or falcon surmounting the motto 'Strike'.

Size: Suggested 37" waist, NB the calf is quite slim. All measurements are external, taken with the garment laid flat, to be doubled where appropriate for circumference (with approx. metric equivalent):
Waist: 18 1/2" (47cm) Inside leg to hem: 20" (51cm) Outside leg: 32" (81cm) Rise - crotch seam to top of waist: 16 1/2" (42cm) Leg width at hem: 6" (15cm)
Condition: In good condition overall - do not appear much worn but there a number of areas where moths have eaten the plush surface of the fabric (but not the backing), the worst are on the right rear hip & back left knee (circled & shown in close up) & there are some smaller ones on the front - 2 moth chews with small holes in the V of the fishtail - a couple of faint brown spots on the lower back left leg which the camera couldn't see - the gold braid is tarnished - 1 button is missing from the left calf - minor wear & discolouration to the linings & pocket bags. Have been thoroughly steamed & brushed prior to listing, but not cleaned.
