A weatherbeaten vintage 1940s belted Raglan or Balmacaan type overcoat, bespoke tailored in 1947 by 'J.Pickles & Sons' from Harris Tweed fabric in a lovely rust brown colour. It has lightly padded shoulders, long pointed collar, slash pockets with thick corduroy lining, darts at the rear waist & a kick vent; body lined in a checked cotton/rayon fabric such as is used in raincoats, sleeves lined in iridescent coppery rayon. The front fastens with horn effect plastic buttons & the belt has a (replacement) plastic leather-effect buckle; for some reason the coat was made with buttonholes on both sides, perhaps tailor error at a time when fabric was too scarce to rectify, & the ones on the button side sewn up.

Size: Suggested Small / Short, to fit about a 36" chest, depending on whether a suit jacket is worn beneath.

All measurements are external, taken with the garment laid flat, to be doubled where appropriate for circumference (with approx. metric equivalent):
Chest - armpit to armpit: 23" (58.5cm)
Sleeve length centre neck to cuff: 32 1/2" (82.5cm) - about 2" available to let down
Armpit to cuff: 15 1/2" (39.4cm)
Waist: 22 1/2" (57cm)
Back length - base of collar to hem: 43" (109cm)
Condition:
In characterful, fairly well-worn but serviceable condition, with some flaws - a slight fade from exposure across the shoulders - scattered surface snags, rubs & small holes, most noticeably on the centre back, back hem, & right front edge below the buttons - wear & fraying to the buttonholes - the top collar button & kick vent button are missing - the lining has wear, fraying & holes at the neck & shoulders - wear, holes & a burst seam at the armpits. Has been carefully hand washed, thoroughly steamed & brushed prior to listing.
