A really wonderful, super-rare vintage 1940s negligee or peignoir, made from a delicate, sheer, floaty, very fine mesh fabric which I think is some kind of man-made material. It has a V neckline with multicoloured floral embroidery on either side, a deep smocked waistband which rises to a point between the bust, further smocking on the shoulders & cuffs, & wide, ballooney 3/4 length sleeves; the smocking is accentuated by being done in black thread, which is also used around the neckline & scalloped hem, & the front fastens with tiny self-covered ball buttons.

(please check measurements below) All measurements are external, taken with the garment laid flat, to be doubled where appropriate (with approx. metric equivalent): There is some stretch to the smocking, hence the size range Bust (intended to drape): 21" (53.3 cm) Waist: unstretched 8 1/2"- fully stretched 13 1/2" (21.5 cm - 35.5 cm) Hips: free Shoulder width seam to shoulder seam: 15" (38.1 cm) Sleeve length shoulder to cuff: 24" (61 cm) Sleeve underarm to cuff (elbow length): 18" (45.7 cm) Cuff circumference: max 7 1/2" (19 cm) Length nape to hem (can be worn shorter depending on how bloused): 47 1/2" (120.6 cm)
Condition: In excellent condition, appears seldom worn - on close examination there are some very tiny snags & pinpricks to the fabric, mostly towards the hem - the smocking has been carefully re-stitched in a few places.
